The
childrens' reliquary - SMC157
In
1987, to commemorate the 850th anniversary of the founding
of St Magnus Cathedral, the children of Orkney made a pilgrimage
from Egilsay to Kirkwall. They brought with them a stone from
each parish and island inside a wooden reliquary.
This pilgrimage was intended to reflect the procession that
would have been made when the relics of St Magnus were translated
from Birsay to Kirkwall.
The wooden reliquary that was used to transport the stones
can be found in the south triforium of the nave of St Magnus
Cathedral.
