St
Magnus Cathedral was built to store the relics of St Magnus.
As such it must have been an attraction to pilgrims. This
is what the reliquary may have looked like.
The relics of St Magnus would have been on display in a closed
casket known as a reliquary. Some of the gifts and offerings
left by the pilgrims to the shrine would have been used to
buy precious metals and gems to adorn the reliquary and shrine.
A pilgrim is a person who travels to a sacred place as an
act of religious devotion. Now, not many pilgrims visit St
Magnus Cathedral but over 55,000 tourists visit the Cathedral
each year.
