Aumbry
in the south transept chapel - SMC154
Located
in various places throughout St Magnus Cathedral are aumbrys.
They are recesses built into the walls of the Cathedral. This
particular aumbry is in the south transept chapel.
An aumbry is a small cupboard, usually located near an altar,
and is used to store sacred vessels and other items. The word
comes from the Latin 'armarium' which means closet.
Today the aumbrys of St Magnus Cathedral, especially in the
transept chapels, are still used as storage spaces.
