Court
book of Orkney and Shetland - SMC152
St
Magnus Cathedral was used as a court for civil and criminal
cases. This is recorded in the "Court Book of Orkney
and Shetland 1612-1613" which is Orkney's oldest surviving
court record.
The entry in the Court Book for the 30th of July 1612 reads,
when translated, "Court held at the city of Kirkwall
in Orkney in the church of St Magnus, 30th July AD 1612, by
a venerable father in Christ, James, bishop of Orkney".
The "Court Book of Orkney and Shetland 1612-1613"
is located in the General Register House at Edinburgh.
