The choir stalls - SMC150
These choir stalls can be found in the choir of St Magnus Cathedral. They were carved from Scottish Oak in the 1920s from designs by George Mackie Watson.
The stalls are adorned by angels bearing coats of arms and animals of biblical significance. The animals include a ram in a thicket, Gen 22:13. Carved onto the west end of the stalls are bishops' coats of arms along with mitres and croziers.
The stalls are where the choir sit and stand while singing. Originally the part of a church called the choir would have contained the seats of the clergy.
