The 850th anniversary font - SMC147
To mark the 850th anniversary of St Magnus Cathedral the children of Orkney made a pilgrimage to the Cathedral from the island of Egilsay. They brought with them the stones from each parish and island of Orkney which were then used to embellish a font which was placed in the St Rognvald
The font is mainly constructed from red and yellow sandstone. It is embellished by eight marble columns and the bowl is surrounded by a marble band. Set into the marble band are twenty nine polished stones from around Orkney.
A font is used during christening to hold the water that is used to bless the child.
