The iron rings - SMC142
At the ground level of St Magnus Cathedral, iron rings have been installed in the piers of the crossing. These rings were placed in the Cathedral by Cromwellian troops during the 1650s. They were probably used to tether horses.
When Cromwell's troops arrived in Kirkwall, the Magistrates and Town Council refused to perform their duty. As punishment troops were garrisoned in Kirkwall while the rest of the county
While the Cathedral was occupied by Cromwell's soldiers they are claimed to have burned and smashed seats. Remarkably they left all the fine wood carving alone. The copper canopy of Bishop Tulloch's tomb may have been stolen by the troops.
