Bishop Bjarni Kolbeinsson - SMC139


Bjarni Kolbeinsson was Bishop of Orkney from 1188 to 1223. He was the son of Kolbein Hruga, "Cubbie Roo", who built a castle on Wyre. This carving of Bjarni Kolbeinsson is on the organ screen of St Magnus Cathedral.

Bjarni continued the construction of St Magnus Cathedral and during his episcopate some design changes were introduced. These changes included the extension of the choir and the construction of square transept chapels.

Bishop Bjani Kolbeinsson is known as a poet, a diplomat and a man of letters. He was also responsible for the translation of St Rognvald's relics into St Magnus Cathedral.
