Workers who built the cathedral - SMC135

This picture is an artist's impression of the different types of worker involved in the construction of St Magnus Cathedral. It is likely that the master craftsmen came from outside Orkney but that many Orcadians were used as labourers.

Due to the similarities in design and construction with Dunfermline Abbey and Durham Cathedral it is quite possible that the masons and other master craftsmen came from the north-east of England, and also Fife, after completing work there.

Nothing is known about the individuals involved in the construction of the Cathedral. However, the stonemasons left their individual "masons' marks" on the stonework.
