Norwegian Flag - SMC129
Hanging just below the triforium in the north transept of St Magnus Cathedral is a Norwegian Flag. It is on display to symbolise the links between Orkney and Norway.
The Norwegian Flag is red with a blue cross within a white cross. The blue symbolises the ocean, red symbolises blood, and white symbolises the snow.
Orkney was once ruled by the Kings of Norway and has many historic links with Scandinavia. These links still exist in the form of Royal visits and the annual Norwegian Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.
