Sixteenth century map of Scandinavia - SMC127

On view in Tankerness House Museum, Orkney, is a reproduction of a sixteenth century map of Scandinavia. It was made by Olaus Magnus and published in 1539 in Venice.

While exiled in Italy, following the Protestant Reformation in Sweden, Olaus was secretary of Archbishop John of Uppsala. Following the death of John, Olaus was appointed his successor but spent the rest of his life in exile.

While the map may seem very inaccurate it was the best map of the whole of Scandinavia at that time.
