Map of Kirkwall around 1130 - SMC126
This map can be found in Buckham Hugh Hossack's book 'Kirkwall in the Orkneys'. The map shows what Kirkwall may have looked like in the time of Earl Rognvald I.
The map shows that the Peerie Sea was open to Kirkwall Bay at the west end of the Aire, or Ayre. It also shows the location of the Castle and St Olaf's Church. Kirkwall's nineteenth century streets and coastline are also shown.
From the map it can be seen that Kirkwall's coastline with the Peerie sea was very different in the eleventh century with boats able to land close to the Castle and Cathedral.
