Strain gauges in the nave - SMC123
During the 1970s it was discovered that the nave of St Magnus Cathedral was facing imminent collapse. The west façade was leaning outward and the vaulting was damaged. Following an appeal to raise money the nave was repaired.
Further movement of the nave is monitored by spring gauges in the walls. These can be checked by connecting a device to a socket. There is a socket in the south nave aisle.
The west end of the Cathedral was not completed until the fifteenth or sixteenth century. The damage to the nave has been blamed on poor workmanship rather than subsidence.
