Strain gauges in the transepts - SMC122

Located at various points on the crossing and transepts of St Magnus Cathedral, at both triforium and clerestory leves, are devices used to monitor the movement of the building.

Following the repair work in the 1970s these gauges have been used to monitor if the Cathedral walls are unstable. They are placed in the transepts and crossing due to the large amount of strain placed upon the walls by the weight of the tower.

There is little evidence to suggest that St Magnus Cathedral is unstable due to subsidence in the soil and foundations. The problems in the nave that were addressed in the 1970s were probably caused by poor construction.
