850th anniversary children's pilgrimage - SMC121

During 1987 the children of Orkney took part in a pilgrimage for St Magnus. This was to mark the 850th year since the Cathedral's founding.

The pilgrimage began on Egilsay, the location of St Magnus's Martrydom, and progressed by relay around the West Mainland. After passing through Evie, Birsay, Sandwick, Stenness and Orphir, the pilgrimage arrived at St Magnus Cathedral in the presence of HRH The Queen.

As a reminder of the occasion each parish, or island, provided a sea washed stone to embellish a font. The font is now placed in the St Rognvald Chapel in the Cathedral. An account of the pilgrimage can also be found in the chapel.
