The 800th anniversary pageant - SMC118

Celebrations were held in Kirkwall between the 29th of July and the 1st of August 1937 to mark the 800th anniversary, or Octocentenary, of St Magnus Cathedral. The 29th of July, St Olaf's Day, saw a historical pageant take place.

The pageant was a play of eight scenes in length. It gave an account of the history of Orkney from pagan times to Norse times and included the martyrdom of St Magnus and the founding of the Cathedral.

The pageant was co-written by Eric Linklater and J Storer Clouston, and was performed by about 600 actors. There were performances both in the afternoon and in the evening.
