Mackay Brown's novel 'Magnus' - SMC109
George
Mackay Brown is Orkney's best known, author, poet and dramatist
of the twentieth century. He was born in Stromness in 1921,
where he spent most of his life, and died in 1996.
'Magnus' has been described as George Mackay Brown's most
poetic and innovative novel. It is a novel about the murder
of St Magnus and links the twelfth century martyrdom to the
concentration camps of World War II, finding echoes of human
goodness and human evil.
'Magnus' provided the inspiration for 'The Martyrdom of St
Magnus' a music-drama, on which he collaborated with Sir Peter
Maxwell Davies. The piece launched the St Magnus Festival
in 1977.
