Thorfinn I Stained Glass Window - SMC097

Located at clerestroy level in the east wall of the south transept of St Magnus Cathedral is a stained glass window of Thorfinn I "Skullsplitter".

Thorfinn I was Earl of Orkney from 954-976. He was the son of Torf-Einar. The Orkneyinga Saga tells little of his rule but it can be guessed from his nickname, Skullsplitter, that it was violent.

The Howe of Hoxa on South Ronaldsay is traditionally thought of as his burial mound. This window was created and installed during the 1920s by the studio of Oscar Patterson.
