Thorfinn
II Stained Glass Window - SMC096
Located
in the north transept of St Magnus Cathedral at clerestory
level is a stained glass window of Thorfinn II 'The Mighty',
Earl of Orkney.
Thorfinn was the son of Earl Sigurd II and was brought up
in the court of King Malcolm II of Scotland. After many power
struggles he emerged as sole ruler of the Orkney Earldom.
In 1049-1050 he made a pilgrimage to Rome and arranged for
Orkney to have a bishop.
Thorfinn was established control of Orkney over Shetland,
and reconquered the Hebrides. The window was made by the studio
of Oscar Patterson.
