St
Martin of Tours Stained Glass Window - SMC092
Located
in the south nave of St Magnus Cathedral at clerestory level
is a window dedicated to St Martin of Tours. He is shown bearing
a torn cloak.
St Martin, born in 316, was the son of a Military Tribune.
After serving in the army, Martin led a solitary life for
10 years. Around 372 he became Bishop of Tours and in 397
he died. While he was a soldier in Amiens he met a very cold
and half naked beggar. Martin tore his cloak apart and gave
half of it to the beggar. The part he kept became a famous
relic.
