The building as it stood in the mid-twelfth century - SMC088

This diagram shows the extent of St Magnus Cathedral by the time construction came to a temporary halt in the mid-twelfth century.

The choir and eastern apsed chapel were complete. The transepts were completed up to triforium level and the apse chapels had been constructed. The nave was completed at triforium level to the third bay and wall arcading was completed to the fifth bay.

The church remained like this for about forty years until Bishop Bjarni Kolbeinsson re-started construction. The church wouldn't be fully completed for at least another three centuries.
