The Scar boat burial on Sanday - SMC076

In 1991 a Viking boat burial was excavated at Scar on Sanday in the Orkney Islands. It was unusual because it contained three bodies.

The man was buried with weapons, gaming pieces, lead weights, and a very fine comb. The old woman was buried with a lot of items associated with textile production including shears and a very well made whalebone plaque used for pressing linen. She was also buried with a very rare type of gilded bronze brooch.

The items found with the woman suggest that she was an important member of society. Textile production was an activity associated with wealthy Viking women.
