A burial place for King Hakon Hakonson - SMC067
In December 1263 King Hakon Hakonson died in Kirkwall at the Bishop's Palace. He was on his way back from an unsuccessful expedition to the west coast of Scotland. He was temporarily interred before the shrine of St Magnus and taken to Norway in 1264.
To commemorate the 700th anniversary of his internment in St Magnus Cathedral the Norwegian government donated a marble slab engraved in Latin with the date of his death. The slab can be found in the choir where it is placed in the floor.
In the south triforium of the nave is a limestone coffin which may have been used as the temporary resting place of Hakon.
