The wall grave stone of Nicola Trail - SMC063
As Kirkwall had a small population n the seventeenth century it was possible to be buried in the nave of St Magnus Cathedral if the fees could be afforded. Seventeenth century grave stones line the aisles of St Magnus Cathedral.
This is the grave stone of Nicola Trails who died on the 23rd of July 1688. The grave stone is very lavish and contains a great many different symbols.
The stone is framed with ionic columns and an arch inscribed with 'Heaven Opened'. A woman stands on a globe marked 'vanitas', Latin for vanity, appealing to a figure of the Lord holding a crown. Also on the stone are a skull and crossbones
