The
wall grave stone of Elizabeth Cuthbert - SMC062
Because
the population of Kirkwall was below 1500 in the seventeenth
century it was possible to be buried in the nave of the cathedral,
if you could afford the fees. The nave and choir of St Magnus
Cathedral are lined with many seventeenth century grave stones.
This is the grave stone of Elizabeth Cuthbert who was the
wife of Reverend James Wallace, minister of St Magnus Cathedral,
she died in 1685.
The grave stone is dominated by the high relief of a kneeling
woman being handed a crown from heaven. It is also engraved
with a skull and crossbones, a timer, and a rose.
