Wall grave stones - SMC061
In the seventeenth century the population of Kirkwall was less than 1500 and anyone who could afford the fees could be buried in the nave of the cathedral. A number of seventeenth century grave stones line the walls of the nave and choir of St Magnus Cathedral.

This is the grave stone of Patrick Prince, a Kirkwall merchant who died in 1673 aged. The inscription states the name of his wife Margaret Grott and also the names of his 5 children. This is followed by a short verse of poetry.

The stone is quite weathered but it is still possible to make out the symbols on the stone. There is a prominent skeleton and emblems of death and resurrection.
