The
carved designs that can be found on the top of columns and
piers are known as capitals. In St Magnus Cathedral there
are a large number of different types of capital decorations.
Water leaf capitals can be found in the crossing and transepts.
This capital is on the east window of the south transept chapel.
Water leaf capitals consist of a broad leaf design which is
unribbed and tapered. It curves out and then turns in at the
top. The water leaf capital is a distinctive late twelfth
century design.
Water leaf capitals, which are very similar to the St Magnus
Cathedral designs, can be found at Rippon Collegiate Church,
carved in the 1180s, and other Northern English churches,
