Dragons on a capital in the north side of the presbytery - SMC058
The top of a column or pier is known as a capital. Capitals are usually carved into a design and St Magnus Cathedral has a great many different types of design. On the north side of the rose window in the presbytery is a capital decorated with dragons.
In Christian symbolism dragons are associated with evil practices and paganism. The use of such symbols can be compared to the use of pagan 'Green Men' in capital decoration.
The dragon carvings of St Magnus Cathedral can be linked to both churches in Norway and churches in Scotland.
