Mercat Cross Replica - SMC049
Located on the Kirk Green, outside St Magnus Cathedral, is a replica of the original Mercat Cross. The original can be found in the north transept of St Magnus Cathedral.
Before being moved to the Kirk Green in 1762 the cross was originally located at the bottom of the Strynd. The replica was erected in 1954 and the original was placed in the cathedral.
Market Crosses played an important function in the Royal Burgh. The sanctity of the cross was used to seal verbal contracts and verify the truth of proclamations.
