Green Man - SMC046
This carving can be found on the north presbytery wall. It is one of 5 such carvins.
Depictions of green men were originally fertility symbols but were used by the mediaeval church to represent the corruption of the flesh. The leaves and foliage represent decay and sin.
Mediaeval depictions of green men were influenced by Roman designs. The main difference between the two styles is that the Roman green men appear benevolent while mediaeval depictions are otherwise.
