Stained
glass techniques - SMC045
The
glass is coloured by adding metal oxides to the glass while
it is molten. Fine features, such as faces and lettering,
are created by painting enamel onto the glass.
In order to make a stained glass window the plan is drawn
out full scale on a bench or table. The individual pieces
of glass are then placed on top of the plan, in the correct
places, and joined together with lead strips that are then
soldered in place.
Stained glass is the term used to describe windows made from
pieces of coloured glass which are arranged in a design. The
techniques of making stained glass have changed little since
it was developed in the eleventh century.
