Hordaland Tapestry - SMC044
This tapestry was a gift from the Hordaland Council, Norway, to the people of Orkney. It was presented at the 850th anniversary celebrations on the 19th of August 1987 by the King of Norway to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

The tapestry symbolises a sail, which carries a bond between Orkney and Norway. The white represents the old communal history while the black and violet weave pattern represents the ties of friendship between Norway and Orkney.

The tapestry is based on fabrics which are often found in old Norwegian churches.
