West
Nave Vaulting- SMC043
In
the early 1970s it was noted that extensive repairs to the
west nave of the cathedral were required. On the 18th of January
1972 an appeal was launched to raise £300,000 for the
repairs.
The work that was carried out included the grouting of the
pillars; steel girders were placed above the nave ceiling
and in the clerestory passageways; some of the stone ribbing
was rebuilt; and fibre glass shells were inserted in the interstices
of the roof.
In 1974 a service was held to celebrate the saving of the
cathedral and the raising of the first £100,000. Queen
Elizabeth the Queen Mother, patron of the Friends of St Magnus
Cathedral, was present.
