The polychrome stone work - SMC031
One of the most striking features of St Magnus Cathedral is the so-called polychrome stone work. This is the use of alternating red and yellow sandstone.
The best examples of this stone work can be found in the south transept doorway and the three doorways in the west end. Sir Henry Dryden considered the polychrome stone work of St Magnus Cathedral to be the "finest examples in Great Britain of the use of stones in two different colours".
Much of the original external stonework has been eroded by the climate of Orkney.
