The 17th Century Pulpit - SMC029
The south triforium of the nave contains the remains of a 17th century pulpit.
This pulpit was constructed in 1689 as a replacement to the original one which had survived the Reformation. It was made by William Tait at a cost of fifty pounds Scots.
A pulpit is a raised, enclosed platform from which a preacher delivers a sermon. The importance of preaching and sermons in the Protestant Church meant that the pulpit became a focal point.
