The Hangman's Ladder - SMC028
A hangman's double ladder can be found in the south triforium of the nave.

This is another relic of punishment with which the cathedral is connected, along with Marwick's hole. One side of the ladder is said to be more worn than the other and corresponds to the fact that the side used by the condemned was only travelled one way.

This ladder was used at the gallows in Kirkwall which were situated at the top of the Clay Loan, an area which is now a flower bed.
