The Church of St Magnus on Egilsay - SMC022
This church is situated on Egilsay at the site where St Magnus was martyred in 1117. It is constructed in the Romanesque style and probably dates to the middle of the 12th century.
The church has a rectangular nave with a square chancel to the east and a round tower to the west. The tower still stands to a height of 14.9m but may have been as high as 20m. The windows and doors all have round arches but they have mostly been blocked up since the 19th century.
In 1822 the church was still roofed by flagstones and the tower had a conical roof. St Magnus Church is a prime example of a round-towered church.
