Mackay Brown - SMC019
George
Mackay Brown was born in 1921 and died in 1996. He was a poet,
playwright and novelist. He has a dedicatory plaque in the
presbytery of St Magnus Cathedral.
He spent nearly all his life in the Orkney Islands. He suffered
tuberculosis during his 20s and never fully recovered to enjoy
good health. Norse history, the sagas, and his conversion
to Roman Catholicism can be counted as the greatest inspirations
for his work.
His poetry and novels are known world-wide and he published
a number of volumes of poetry and novels. He was a regular
contributor to 'The Orcadian' newspaper as a columnist and
reporter. He also collaborated with the composer Sir Peter
Maxwell Davies.
