The Memorial to Dr John Rae - SMC018
Dr John Rae was born in Orphir in 1813 and died in London in 1893. He was an explorer of Canada and a memorial to him is housed in the eastern end of the south choir aisle.
He worked for the Hudson Bay Company and was responsible for the mapping of a large proportion of Northern Canada. He discovered the North West Passage that linked the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic. He led a number of expeditions, including an 1854 search for the remains of the 1845 Franklin expedition.
In 1864 he made the trans-Greenland survey for the Atlantic Telegraph Company. He retired to London and worked on Arctic and Canadian affairs, after a brief return to Orkney.
