Stanley Cursiter - SMC017
Stanley Cursiter was born in Kirkwall in 1887 and died in 1976. He was a famous Orcadian artist educated at Edinburgh College of Art. There is a plaque dedicated to him in the presbytery of St Magnus Cathedral.
During both the First and Second World Wars, he was a military map maker. During peacetime Cursiter specialised in portrait painting and landscapes of the Orkney Islands.
Cursiter was first secretary of Royal Fine Arts Commission for Scotland. He was made full member of RSA in 1937, President of the Society of Scottish Artists and Director of National Gallery of Scotland. He was appointed Queen's Painter and Limner for Scotland and CBE in 1948.
