The Mort Brod - SMC012
This is a curious memorial which can be found hanging in the north aisle of the nave. It is constructed of wood and has a rhyming inscription and Picture of Death.

A Mort Brod is a board (brod) with a representation of Death (Mort). In this case Death is shown as a shrouded skeleton and on the opposite side there is a rhyming inscription dedicated to Robert Nicolson. The inscription explains that his body lies beneath the board and that he left a wife.

The Mort Brod dates from the 17th century and the nave and transepts were used for burials until the middle of the 19th century.
