The Cathedral Dungeon - SMC011
The Cathedral Dungeon is located between choir and the south transept. It is also known as Marwick's Hole and probably dates from the 16th century.
Situated between the south wall of the choir and south transept chapel a window aperture with darkness behind it shows its position. The dungeon was used as a prison and there are records of men and women being held there as late as the eighteenth century. Its original entrance, from the strong-room was blocked up after the reformation.
The dungeon is not the only evidence for a connection between the Cathedral and punishment, as the old hangman's ladder can be found in the south triforium.
