East Window - SMC009
George
Hunter MacThomas Thoms (1831-1903) was educated in Dundee,
qualified as advocate and was called to the Scottish Bar in
1856. He was appointed Sheriff Principle of Caithness, Orkney
and Zetland in 1870.
He first became interested in church architecture in St Giles
Cathedral Edinburgh, and his interest grew to include St Magnus
Cathedral when he moved north. When he died he left a substantial
part of his estate (£60,000) as the 'Thoms Trust Bequest'
for the restoration and upkeep of the Cathedral. This bequest
was administered by Kirkwall Town Council.
The east window of St Magnus Cathedral is dedicated to Thoms.
