J.M.Gunn - SMC007
Dr John Gunn (1859-1939) was both an author and publisher. He was born in Stromness and educated at Stromness Academy and Edinburgh University.

He was a schoolmaster and Inspector of Schools in the late 19th century. In 1899 he joined the Edinburgh publishers Thomas Nelson & Son and during his time there became Chief Editor. He is perhaps best known as the editor of the first 'Orkney Book' which was published in 1909. The book was intended for use in Orkney's schools and contains much information about Orkney.

Gunn was also the author many other books, which include 'Orkney, the Magnetic North', 'Sons of the Vikings', and 'The Boys of Hamnavoe'.
