Soapstone Head - SMC130

Stored in the north transept chapel of St Magnus Cathedral is a carved soapstone head. The head is a replica of a carving of King Magnus Hakonsson from Nidaros Cathedral in Norway.

The head was presented to the People of Orkney during the 1994 state visit of King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway. The head is carved from soapstone, also known as steatite, and is the consolidated form of the mineral talc.

Other items with direct Norwegian connections can be found in the Cathedral, such as the, flag, the Norwegian Bible, and the Hordaland Tapestry.
