Albert Thomson's paper on masons' marks - SMC111
Albert Thomson's article 'Masons' Marks in St Magnus Cathedral' was published in Orkney Miscellany Volume 2 in 1954. It is still the best researched material on the masons' marks of St Magnus Cathedral.
Thomson gives a good account of the origins of masons' marks and the development of mediaeval masons' guilds and lodges. He also discusses their purpose in quality control and proof of work
The majority of his article is devoted to the location and chronology of the marks. His paper also has diagrams of the different types and styles of marks.
