Among these letters is the famous Declaration of Arbroath of 1320. All the barons commit their seals as a mark of their approval.

As well as appealing to the Pope for recognition, it establishes a strong sense of Scottish identity.

St Andrew is identified as patron saint. You are portrayed as a Gaelic-speaking Celtic King leading a newly united people with a new sense of identity. It is pretty biased, but you need some good press!

In 1324, Pope John XXII acknowledges you as King of the Scots. And in 1328 England sign a peace treaty giving up any rights to Scotland.
