Matt Busby

Manchester United Football Club manager Matt Busby, left, talking to team member Bobby Charlton. Busby was only recently back in the country after the Munich air crash, in which eight members of his team died and he was badly injured.

Busby was the son of a miner, born in Orbiston, Lanarkshire. He started his career with Manchester City in 1928 before moving to Liverpool in 1936 for a fee of £8,000. He became manager of Manchester United in 1945 and spent 24 years there winning 5 league titles and the FA Cup twice before becoming a director and then Club President.

Busby also won a cap with Scotland when he played as a half-back for the national side in 1933.
