A Magazine for Young Workers

image from Red Clydeside collection

Cover of 'The Red Dawn', the official organ of The Proletarian Schools and College, a syndicalist inspired magazine for young workers.

The front cover includes an illustration entitled 'Direct Action' showing organised labour, represented by a worker wielding a hammer of knowledge, ready to strike at the capitalist system. The system is represented in the shape of a greedy capitalist who has gained his profits through war profiteering, militarism and banking capital.

The Proletarian Schools were run on a similar basis to traditional Sunday schools but with the emphasis on the teachings of Marx and revolutionary socialism. At their peak of popularity in the 1920s the schools had over 30 branches in cities and towns throughout Scotland, as well as several in England.
