Imagine
a book, detailing the lives and works of generations, back
to the earliest people to live in Scotland. The book has been written,
and written over, by many hands, in many scripts and many languages,
over many centuries. If such existed, it would be a remarkable key
to understanding Scotland’s past.
Such a text does exist. It is written
not on the page, but in the landscape.
To read it we need only decode the alphabet,
learn the language, decipher the
hand.
Let’s look at how strands of personal experience
– beliefs, the need for food
or shelter, the exercise of power
– run through our history and prehistory.
The Land we Made helps us begin to
read the history written in our landscape. |
